Boomerang
8 dancers on stage – created in 2016
A hunting tool, toy or music instrument, the boomerang has been moving through space and our imagination since the dawn of time. Violence has done the same, immemorial and carved into our very humanity, it lives in the present of our lives. This violence is tangible and grows a little day, it invites itself to our side, it interferes with us. It can be sensed in words or actions. It can be seen in the very arcana of our system where words such as growth, flexibility, and productivity lead to devastation.
But violence can also be a strength, just like red means blood as well as a beating heart. The strength of anger and rage that allows for going beyond limits and against the flow, for a boost of gathering, for relentlessly saying no to the face of frenzy.
A variation on the same theme, Boomerang explores different angles of the energy we all have in ourselves, want it or not.
Bouba Landrille Tchouda, triggered by his taste of challenge and play, throws eight dancers on stage to put forth their energies and sensuality in a sometime sharp, sometime poetical or even playful way. He wants to create a dialogue by making moving forces collapse and shedding light on some of our weaknesses and even contradictions. Highlighting how humans can be gruesome and mighty at the same time, by creating situations of submission to power, by reinventing war games and composing life-saving illusions.
Lives and violence.
These two words sound like they have the same starting point. They echo in the way they are used.

“… In each dancer’s move, there is desire, anger, aggressiveness, passion, frustration… but also a kind of resistance to oppression. Bodies on stage have the elegance and the dazzle of a boomerang thrown in the air…”
Prune Vellot, les affiches de grenoble, 27 janvier 2017
“…Playing on the discrepancy between softness and violence, dance often comes together as abruptly as defeated in sudden impulses and sudden slow motions. Of course, one can see in these uncompromising relationships a reflection of our world full of noise and fury, where aggressiveness only matches indifference. Body language is inventive and exceeds far beyond hip-hop frame …”

“… In circles or alone, fighting against each other or all united in front of a same danger, the eight dancers develop at once a deeply grounded and light dance. Their moves are illuminated by reciprocity, in a couple of either aggressive scenes, or delicate and sensitive ones. One can admire the technique and creativity of its performers, chosen for their personalities and their ability to develop, from a very common theme, original moves and proposals…”
Isabelle Calabre, décembre 2016, ballroom n°12
“… Bouba Landrille Tchouda remains faithful to his search for a political dance that questions what makes or destroy society. Faithful to what has been hip-hop at the beginning, a dance that lets human expression possible…”
